macOS Installer Verification & Deployment Guide
InstallAssistant.pkg vs. IPSW Restore Images
InstallAssistant.pkg: Official Apple installer distribution packages. When executed, they extract the full Install macOS [Version].app bundle directly into your /Applications directory. They are compatible with both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs and can be distributed silently through Jamf Pro, Kandji, Munki, or Microsoft Intune without user prompts.
IPSW Universal Restores: Designed strictly for Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5 series) architecture. These bundles are flashed directly to NAND storage over USB-C via Apple Configurator or Finder when a device is in Device Firmware Update (DFU) recovery mode. They completely re-partition APFS containers and install Secure Enclave firmware.
Creating Bootable Installation Media
Once you download and run the InstallAssistant.pkg, open Terminal and execute Apple's native createinstallmedia command targeting a formatted external USB flash drive (minimum 16GB):
Cryptographic Package Verification
Before deploying packages to production fleets, always verify that the download has not been tampered with and was legitimately signed by Apple's Software Update certificate:
Status: signed by Apple Software Update with Authority chain including Apple Software Update Certificate Authority.
